full of empty
Full of Empty is the project's name. It is a work of art that happens to be a website. mini blackholes is one of Full of Empty's children.
I've been an artist since 2005. Over the years I've worked in different forms and different places. Some people may know my work from the album artwork I made for DIIV and their album Is the Is Are, or from my work for GQ magazine.
Full of Empty comes out of that same practice, but it takes it somewhere else.
It is the first of ten websites I am making. They are all different, but they came from the same impulse. I wanted to make things for the internet that weren't really trying to be websites. I wanted to make places that people could enter.
The drawings are a big part of that.
I wanted each world to have its own drawing. Not an illustration explaining what you're looking at, and not something added to make the page look nice. The drawing is the place. It sets the mood before anything is said.
They are very simple.
Clean lines. Mostly black and white. A character. A cloud. A strange little situation. Sometimes there is almost nothing there.
But there is a lot happening in those little drawings.
They can be funny and sad at the same time. They can look almost ridiculous and then, a moment later, feel strangely familiar.
I like leaving space around them.
I like the fact that a few lines can suggest an entire world.
The drawings don't tell you what to think. They don't explain themselves. They just sit there and wait for you to enter.
And then the words come in.
Every week there is a question.
But the question isn't really the point.
It's just the door.
You can answer it, or completely ignore it.
Go there and talk.
